Stay-at-Home Dads: The Challenges and Benefits

If you are a stay-at-home dad, you already know that you’re part of a rapidly growing group. In recent years, the number of fathers taking on the role as primary caregiver has increased dramatically.
Why? Some of the most common reasons include:
- personal choice/desire to care for the family
- chronic illness or disability
- child care costs/partner is the primary earner
- job loss
- same-sex couple relationship where one parent chooses to stay home
While there are challenges that some stay-at-home dads face, such as isolation, lack of support, stigma or depression, there are many wonderful benefits as well. Some of these benefits include a stronger relationship with your partner, stronger relationships with your children, positive outcomes for children spending more one-on-one time with a parent, and contributing to the redefinition of social norms.
Whatever choice you make for your family is only yours to make. There are so many factors that are taken into account and these types of decisions are never crystal clear.
